Project Overview
Teal is a comprehensive app for fitness, nutrition, and mindfulness - a holistic wellness app. Teal was created with a sole intention of making fitness and wellness available to every corner of the country at the most affordable price.
The Problem
The COVID-19 pandemic brought about unprecedented global challenges, and India was no exception. The nationwide lockdowns imposed to control the spread of the virus had far-reaching effects on the daily lives of millions. With restrictions on movement and social interactions, a large portion of the population transitioned to working from home, drastically reducing their physical activity. This shift contributed to a more sedentary lifestyle, characterized by prolonged periods of sitting and minimal physical exercise. Additionally, the stress and uncertainty led to altered eating habits, with an increased consumption of processed and junk food.
The Goal
We wanted to create an app with the sole intention of making fitness and wellness available to every corner of the country at the most affordable price.
What we want to achieve:
-
Improve Fitness : Personalised fitness plans to achieve your specific fitness goals be it, weight loss, weight gain or muscle toning
-
Improve Medical Conditions: Specific workout, nutrition and lifestyle plans have been created to help better manage medical conditions like diabetes, BP etc.
-
Gain Immunity and Improve general health: Teal is not just for those aiming to lose weight or manage their medical condition, but also for those who want to improve their health
-
Mindfulness for all: Teal aims to increase the awareness around the importance of mental health and at the same time help people fix it by the means of breathing exercises and meditations, for all mood and concerns, from anxiety to sleep issues.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
How might we build a versatile wellness app that personalizes the health journey, combining fitness, nutrition, and mental health into one cohesive experience?

Identifying the Opportunity

Identifying Opportunity
STAGE 1: RESEARCH
-
High Pricing: From our Analysis, it was evident, the pricing of all the apps is high, an average Indian person would not want to spend ₹3000 on a generic online based workout or diet plan. Additionally, the apps only provide generic plans.
-
Most of the apps had a very limited database of Indian meals, making it hard for the user to track calories while inputing the meals
-
Except cult.fit, none of our other competitors had meditation sessions which is very important for a healthy lifestyle specially during the lockdown
-
None of the apps offer a social aspect where the users can interact with others and neither do they provide an option for live chat with experts to clarify their doubts which makes it very hard for users to stick to the app.
Key takeaways : Generic Plans and High costs
Learning from Competitors to Identify Gaps
We analyzed leading wellness apps like HealthifyMe, CureFit, and Fittr to understand their strengths and weaknesses. I rated the most relevant UI/UX features against a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being bad and 5 being excellent.
STAGE 2: EMPATHIZE
Understanding the problem and identfying pain points
Method: Personal Interviews
To gain an understanding into the pains and needs of users, we prepared questions and conducted user interviews to learn more about the problems that users face in this context and to focus on issues that we will address in the future. We found the following insights.
Online Workouts and Indoor Exercise Trends
Most of the people used either Youtube to exercise or would walk around the house or their building corridor
The Cost Barrier of Personal Trainers & Nutritionists
People found it expensive to have personal trainer or nutritionists who would prepare personalised plans for them
Generic Advice & Misinformation
People tookup random and generic workout or diet plans/advice from the internet, people turned to crash diets which messed up their metabolism
Lack of Awareness
Most of the people did not do anything about their stress or anxiety or they were unaware of the subject
User Personas
I identified 2 important target groups with two different age groups and diverse profiles. The User persona will give us an overall idea about our target audience and their characteristics which will help me create effective solutions
1. Insight: People find personal trainers or nutritionists expensive, leading them to follow random and generic plans from the internet.
-
User Story: As a user, I want personalized workout and diet plans that are affordable so that I can follow a routine tailored to my needs without breaking the bank.

-
User Story: As a user, I want resources and tools to help me understand and manage stress and anxiety so that I can maintain my mental well-being.
3. Insight: Most of the apps had a very limited database of Indian meals, making it hard for the user to track calories while inputing the meals
-
User Story: As a user who primarily consumes Indian meals, I want an app with a comprehensive database of Indian dishes so that I can accurately track my calorie intake without difficulty. without breaking the bank.
STAGE 3: IDEATE
Transforming User Insights into User Stories and App Features
4. Insight: None of the apps offer a social aspect where the users can interact with others and neither do they provide an option for live chat with experts to clarify their doubts which makes it very hard for users to stick to the app.
-
User Story: As a user, I want an app that includes a social platform for interacting with other users and offers live chat with experts so that I can stay engaged, get support, and have my questions answered in real-time.

Launch
We had a soft launch, on the Google play store and Apple play store. I created a website for the app and an Instagram page for marketing purposes. We achieved our first huge milestone when we hit over 100K downloads within 1.5 months of the launch and we
were featured as the top trending app on the Playstore for 3 weeks straight.
